The different waveforms
The different waveforms generated by UPSs
The UPSs generate various waveforms of the output voltage with specific characteristics and therefore different uses:
- SINUSOIDAL wave
It is the IDEAL waveform for feeding any type of load.
It is normally generated by UPS Line-Interactive and On-Line.
- STEPS wave
It is a wave that very closely simulates a sinusoid.
It can be used without any contraindication from computer systems; on the other hand, it can present problems with some types of linear load (motors, lamps, etc.).
It has the advantage of economy.
It is normally generated by UPS Line-Interactive and Stand-by.
- SQUARE wave
It is a wave too far from the ideal shape.
Its use is always advised against.
It is generated by some UPS Stand-by.
